I’ve taken quite a lot of freedoms with the pattern, but I like both the original and how this turned out. The body is crocheted in one piece, with the head following the pattern and then free form from the neck down. The spikes along the back are made as a long chain, with row 2 as a variety of sc, hdc and dc, with sl in between.
